about

Track is about a teenager in Oxford Ohio in late 1950s who was too young to go into a bar so he listened to a young Lonnie Mack from the alley. The kind of music Lonnie played led him (and many others including some DJs) to assume Lonnie was a Black man. It wasn't until Lonnie's 1963 hit Memphis went to the Top Ten that the teen (and others) discovered Lonnie was a "white cat.' Not that it mattered, as whether he was Black, White, Red or Yellow, Lonnie Mack was on his way to being a guitar icon celebrated by all.

lyrics

When Lonnie Mack Was Black:

VERSE 1
Was raised in southern Ohio, when Lonnie made the scene
He jumped the joints in Cincinnati and McGonigles’ Twilight Inn.
A7
He rocked Oxford’s uptown bars, He was only 18

E B
Young man was stretching guitar strings, like they ain’t never been.

VERSE 2
Loved Little Richard, Bo Didley, Jackie Wilson
Ray Charles, Fats Domino, Sam Cooke was really somethin’

A7
I heard Lonnie’s roadhouse, his soulful bluesy sound
E B
That screaming, steaming Flying V, knew the man was brown

VERSE 3
Too young for the bars, down the alley I’d dig his songs
Chicken Pickin’, The Bounce, and Why, and Baby, What’s Wrong

A7
No one can boogie woogie, like ole Lonnie Mack
E B
His gospel wail on Satisfied, Good god he must be black

Chorus
A7
Yeah, thought Lonnie was a brother, darker than blue,
E
The way he rocked that Number. 7 on Down and Out and Susi Q
A7
He cut ole Chuck’s Memphis, found out I was wrong,
E?
Lonnie Mack is a white cat, rockin' roadhouse all night long

LM instrumental rift here 3 times then down to LAST VERSE
E
Black, white, red, or yellow, doesn’t matter what I am
Wanna be a guitar hero, start with Lonnie’s Wham

A7
Try Rockin’ Pneumonia, and Boogie Woogie Flu

E B
Jamming Lonnie Mack music, country, rock or blues
A7////….down to E///
